Hourly rate calculator for autónomos 🇪🇸

A free community project. Beta version. About

As an autónomo, not all the work you do is paid work. Part of it will go into monthly bookkeeping and other administrative chores, downtime during Internet or device outages, customer acquisition, advertising, research, training and education, et cetera. Estimate here how much of your work will actually be paid work.

If all the time you entered above is for paid work, enter 100.

A regular full-time worker in Spain is entitled to 22 working days (30 calendar days) of vacation.

Autónomos in Spain get 60%-75% of their 'base cotizable' in sick pay, but can often be too little to survive.

Enter here how for many sick days you want to plan for in your hourly rate.

If you have separate sick pay insurance or an arrangement with a client under which you will get paid on sick days like a regular employee, enter 0.

Spain has 12 official bank holidays.

When a work day coincides with a bank holiday, regular employees typically get paid anyway. Autónomos typically do not. That's why bank holidays need to be reflected in your hourly rate.

If you have an arrangement with a client under which you will get paid on bank holidays like a regular employee, or you don't care about bank holidays, enter 0.

Enter here the sum of all of your deductible business expenses (but not your Social Security contributions, those are calculated automatically.)

  • Purchases like computers and tools*
  • Business premises or office
  • Work related mortgage costs, interest
  • Internet and telephone bills (if separate from private use)
  • Software purchases and subscriptions
  • Car / transport costs for work purposes*
  • Business travel and hotel costs
  • Restaurant food during business travel
  • Office equipment
  • Any additional work-related insurance
  • Gestor and consulting costs
  • Work-related bank account costs
  • Web site, hosting, domains
  • Advertising on web sites, in magazines, etc.
* this tool treats amortizaciones, purchases of equipment > 300 Euros that need to be written off over several years, as normal purchases deductible in the same year which can skew the results. If your expenses include a lot of amortizaciones, the calculated hourly wage may end up being too low.

This tool automatically calculates Social Security rates based on the information on this Infoautonomos page.

The tool does not take into account Social Security discounts for new autónomos.

The reason for this was lack of time. However, it is arguably a good idea not to use these discounts to offer lower hourly rates in the first year anyway. The discounts are a gift for the autónoma or autónomo and best used to invest in the business or build reserves for difficult times!

Enter here how much you want to actually earn in take-home pay.

This number is roughly comparable with the salary of a regular employee, although you have to bear in mind they still have advantages an autónomo doesn't have, for example job security and severance payments on termination.

This tool helps new and existing autónomos to roughly calculate a minimum sustainable hourly rate. It takes into account their expenses, social security fees, and benefits that regular employees have that autónomos don’t - for example paid vacation days, paid bank holidays, and sick days. All this needs to be reflected in autónomos’ hourly pay.

This is a community tool programmed by Pekka Gaiser. I occasionally hang out in the Autonomos Facebook group. If you have questions related to the autónomo side of the tool, it's probably best to ask them there.

The tool is free of charge. I am not a tax or accounting professional, just a web developer working as a fellow autónomo in Spain. Use this tool at your own risk. No responsibility is assumed for the correctness of the calculations made by this tool, nor any other problems or damage caused by its use.

This tool can serve to give you a basic idea what your hourly rate needs to be. There are many many details that this tool cannot cover - tax provisions, region-specific rules, age-specific social security contributions, and more.

Any feedback, suggestions, and criticism regarding the calculation or the methodology are welcome.
